In 2021, the Icelandic volcano Fagradalsfjall erupted after a lull of 800 years. Not far from this volcano lies the town of Grindavik and its 3,500 inhabitants. They have just experienced a period of intense seismic activity – no less than 50,000 earthquakes in three weeks!

Iceland straddles the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates, right on top of the world's largest hot spot. This is why this island has the most volcanic activity in the world, with no less than 130 volcanoes, 32 of which are still active.
