François ventures through the vast forests of Schleswig-Holstein, a region whose identity and culture are closely linked to wood.

With Helge Zar, the forest ranger, he observes the different species of tree that make up the great variety of the local surroundings. Peter Isenberg, an authentic lumberjack opposed to mechanisation, gives him a demonstration of tree-felling with his workhorses. In Preetz, François meets Lorenz, the heir of a dynasty of clog makers, who settled in the region in 1846. He ends his journey in Flensburg, visiting a magnificent dockyard that houses wooden racing boats.
