Philippe Charlier sets out to trace the first Christians in the capital of the Roman Empire. He reconstructs their history as he explores the symbolic city of this new faith that was to arise in Rome.

With archaeologist and historian Jean Guyon, Philippe travels along the Via Appia, exploring the catacombs, the first churches of the Vatican, and the paleochristian sites. Philippe meets and talks to Italian archaeologists who are experts on the figure of Saint Peter and the first martyrs. Countering a few preconceived ideas, Philippe analyses the images, legends and objects that made Rome the centre of Christianity.
