Zombies are present in the minds of all Haitians. Every Haitian has heard something about them, and has had at least one close or distant encounter with them. Newspapers there are packed with stories of incidents or of attempted fraud linked to zombies.
This open-minded investigation endeavours to understand the scientific grounds that the principle of zombification – the action of transforming a person into a zombie - are based on. Some answers are to be found at the Laboratory of Molecular Toxicology and Biotechnologies of the Centre for Atomic Energy.
The accounts of experts, doctors, those who think they are victims and voodoo priests all lead to one conviction – what is important is not whether or not zombies exist, in the past or even in the present, but the fact that they embody a journey through time to the ancestral memory of Haitians and their slavery-marked history.
