Today, India is the world's second-largest producer of pharmaceuticals, and is aiming to hit the top spot by 2030. For the past 20 years, the Indian government has been investing in a city in the south of the country: Hyderabad.
This city of 8 million inhabitants is home to the factories of the world's pharmaceutical giants, leading the region into an unprecedented economic boom. However, the population is now suffering the consequences of this economic development without limits or control.
An ecological, human and health disaster is looming. Scientists on site all agree: cancers, malformations and suspicious deaths are all related to permitted water pollution discharges.
Almost 30% of European pharmaceuticals are imported from India, and most of them are produced in Hyderabad.
To meet the ever-increasing demands of Western countries, the Indian government has launched the construction of Hyderabad Pharma City. A massive project destined to become the spearhead of the Indian economy. Over an area the size of 14,000 soccer fields, thousands of factories will spring up, making India the world's leading producer of medicines.
