Gorgona, the smallest island in the Tuscan archipelago, is Europe’s last remaining penal colony. Here, inmates live surrounded by vineyards, olive groves, and cliffs washed by the Tyrrhenian Sea. A total of 85 men—most of whom move freely across this 2.23-square-kilometer islet blanketed in Mediterranean scrub. A paradise from which escape is impossible, despite the absence of perimeter walls and cell doors that stay open during the day. With the mainland 34 kilometers away, the sea itself is the uncrossable barrier.
