After WWII, Japan was the only country to renounce the use of armed force under American protection. However, today, faced with rising tensions in Asia, Japan is moving towards remilitarization against public opinion.
The misnamed Pacific area of South-East Asia, where tensions are increasingly higher and balances are becoming increasingly unstable, is a cause for concern. The various local players (China, North Korea, Russia, the United States...) are constantly arming themselves, provoking each other, and fighting over China and Japan's maritime areas that are off the seas. Faced with rising perils, the Japanese abandoned their pacifist ideals, which were nevertheless engraved in the Japanese constitution, and replaced them with the fear inspired by their aggressive neighbors. Little by little, Japan rearmed, developed its nuclear power, and made crucial choices for its geopolitical future, aspiring to a new place on the world military scene. In this documentary, in addition to depicting the geopolitical stakes of the region, we will go and meet the Japanese citizens: whether they are survivors of the atomic bombings who are now over 80 years old, or young people attached to their country's pacifist values.
