Humus is a layer of living soil made up principally of decomposed matter which is constantly recycled by the many and various forms of microorganisms, insects and small animals. 

In these few inches of earth, more life exists than on the entire planet (not counting marine life). This obviously goes some way to underscore the importance to the ecological balance of all these organisms. 
 
The U.N. has officially named 2015 the “International Year of Soils”.
