In the Edo era, Japan refused visitors. The only way to guess how prosperous and flourishing this society and its culture were, are prints. Katsushika Hokusai – the "old drawing madman" as he called himself – introduced the West to his country through a colossal collection of works.

He vividly depicted a preserved Japan: its inhabitants, its forests, its lakes – but above all, its sacred mountain, Mount Fuji. Under this contemplative's accurate and dynamic stroke, the life flows again at the foot of the mountain.
