Amazonia – the world's green lung – hosts both the biggest equatorial forest and the biggest river system in the world. But humanity's common legacy is actually split between eight states – over 40% of South America.
And especially, it constitutes one of the last great pioneering fronts of these countries – all more or less hungry for more farmland, roads to reach rich ore zones and dams which are indispensable to electrical development. And all of this has led to a massive deforestation since the middle of the 20th century; it is an irretrievable loss of unique biodiversity. Hence begging the question: can we reconcile Amazonian environmental protection with these states’ economic development?
