The Forbidden City is China’s iconic imperial residency. Closed to visitors for centuries, it features in the monumental film by Bernardo Bertolucci, “The Last Emperor”.
The first foreigner allowed to film in this series of square courtyards and majestic doorways, the leftwing director made a film adaptation of the story of Puyi, the emperor who worked in Beijing’s botanical garden after the arrival of Communism in 1949. The title is like a promise; that of the end of empire.
