Norman Manea, Gabriela Adamesteanu, Mircea Cartarescu, Florin Lazarescu: four writers from different generations, four styles, but one country: Romania.

For Mircea Cartarescu “being Romanian means being a shepherd of the ruins”. Norman Manea, who endured the Holocaust, reinvented himself, at the age of 50, as an American writer. Gabriela Adamesteanu returned to literature after a 15-year stint in politically committed journalism.
Florin Lazarescu, the youngest writer of the group, organises the country’s largest literary festival.

The four individual areas they explore make up a surprising and extraordinary map.
Does the country really exist, or is it still fictional? Romania, like the people who live there, is still searching for its identity. The country, which is young compared to others, is concerned, and disappointed by the image it has abroad. It is depressed or simply confused in relation to its recent history. It is also sometimes moved by its founding myths – and is still fundamentally irritated by its peripheral position in Europe.

Our 4 authors have the daunting task of reinventing their country, which is the subject of this film. That is what they have attempted to do through their writings and social actions.
