Here is the story of a country where Hindu and Muslim dynasties have long fought over the control of the peninsula, before British colonization and then independence -which was marked by the painful split between India and Pakistan.
A history of conflict that did not prevent India from establishing the famous "largest democracy in the world", based on universal suffrage in a country of 1.4 billion people, secularism and religious plurality. But this unique achievement is now being jeopardized by the new strong man policy of 21st century India : Narendra Modi and his establishment of an ethnic Hindu democracy, which governs at the expense of the Muslim minority, minorities in general, and a number of counter-powers and freedoms.
