On a global scale, the tourism sector represents on average 10% of the world's GDP and 10% of the world jobs. The Covid-19 pandemic has brought this key sector of the global economy to a brutal halt. Where was the industry standing when the virus hit?
This is an opportunity to look, using maps, at how our way of traveling has evolved since the end of the 19th century, when the word "tourist" was invented, and how, over the decades, more and more of us have gone further and further away, with less and less expensive trips, with the low-cost and all-inclusive industry. We will also see how tourism experts do not agree among themselves on how we will resume our travels, some betting on major changes, less planes, less distant destinations, others on the contrary on a tenfold desire to cross borders when the virus will have disappeared, keeping in mind the issue of health passports. Finally, let's not forget a major geopolitical issue: in the world of tomorrow, China intends to dethrone France as the most visited country in the world as soon as possible.
