At the Mont Blanc’s bottom, the exceptional geological history of the Beaufortin allowed this region to become a great garden perched on the mountain.
To live there, man had to tame with the difference in height. From houses to activities, everything is dictated by the slope’s constraints. In the high mountain pastures, the land is rich and meadows get abundant rain: in the Beaufortin, there is 2 times more rain than in the rest of the country.
Man has always been looking to tap this water. In 1961, the erecting of the EDF Roseland’s flood barrier changed the landscape and the Beaufortin inhabitants’ destiny: compensated for their flooded lands under the dam, a 150 milk producers decided to invest their compensations into a milk cooperative. It is today the first “employer” of the Beaufortin, and produces every year 4800 tons of the famous Beaufort cheese. In these mountains, we can count 4000 inhabitants for 4000 cows!
