A hilly landscape, a few boskets, and vines everywhere, as far as the eye can see… They extend from one village to another. We are in the Bordelais, on Saint-Emilion’s lands. Today, 70% of the landscape’s total surface is occupied by the vineyard.
In the middle of the vines, wine storehouses, landlords houses and more than 200 castles! Saint-Emilion’s village was built in a natural amphitheater. The Romanesque fortifications which surround it were built with stones extracted from the ground.
Under the village, hectares of underground quarries have been dug, as we can see with the Saint-Emilion’s church. Since the 11th century, this large underground building is the second biggest monolith church in the world.
