The Poitevin Marsh is a greenery cathedral where shadow and light alternate… This is the second biggest humid area in France. For centuries, the Marsh has been conceived and maintained by men.

Spread over the sea, this landscape exists only thanks to a complex system of irrigation between two areas closely related: the wet marsh and the dried-up marsh. In this swampy area, often flooded, agriculture was unworkable. We will have to wait the Middle Ages so men could change this land and make it farmable.
The Garette’s village is representative of the inhabitants of the marsh’s way of life.  Its main street goes towards the swamp and, in parallel, the water road allows to access to the small boats and to the holds. Here, everything is organized around the water.
