Shelters under rocks that overhang villages of ocher stones, winding Vézère’s valley in the middle of a dark forest: we are in the black Perigord, a region so prosperous to men that, since Neanderthal Man, they never stopped occupying it.
There, we can find the largest number of marks from Paleolithic’s men, especially with the extraordinary decorated Lascaux’s and Fond de Gaume’s caves. Nevertheless, the Middle Ages left also its print. Villages such as La Roque Saint Christophe or Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère, with a few splendid Romanesque churches, contribute to make the Perigord region a hotspot for tourism.
