The extraction of coal for 3 centuries in Northern France, which houses Europe’s largest underground mining basin, has transformed the landscape.

Miners’ cottages, workers’ estates and gardens cities surround the pits and slag heaps. Mining ceased in December 1990 for economic reasons. Since 2012, the mining landscapes have been classified as UNESCO World Heritage. The installation of the Louvre Museum in Lens, also in 2012, marked the cultural rebirth of the mining city of Lens.
