For a long time, the Salzkammergut was an inaccessible landscape. These mountains harbour the oldest salt mines known to man and have earned the region a “UNESCO World Heritage Site” classification.

Throughout the ages, the mountains have been sculpted from the inside, and the forests cleared. Roads were dug out in order to facilitate the trade of salt towards the Baltic and the Mediterranean. The former mining town of Bad Ischl has been a spa town and a centre of tourism since the 19th century. Empress Sisi used to go there to flee society life at the Austrian court.
