The mountains chain which goes through the continental Portugal culminates to 2000 meters, in La Serra Da Estrela, “the star mountain”. Lakes and hydroelectric dams allow men to irrigate valleys, supply villages with fresh water and electricity. Among them, Pioda, is one of the most beautiful in the entire Portugal.

A national park of 100 000 hectares has been created around the mountain, to protect this region where Lusitanian were settled, the ancestors of the Portuguese. In this natural reserve, the ecosystems are changing according to the height and the climate. A large number of rare species and animals have been listed. And the inhabitants, aware of their traditions’ wealth, of their mountains and forests, have the intention of handing this heritage down to the next generations.
