In these gardens, stone, vegetation and water were designed for the pleasure and glory of 17th century leaders. The castle of Vaux-le-Vicomte, built at the request of Nicolas Fouquet, Louis 14th’s superintendant of finances, boasts one of the first so-called “French gardens”. The gardens were designed by André le Nôtre.

But it is in Versailles that the “French garden”, also designed by Le Nôtre, reaches its most perfect expression. In the some 8,000 hectares of this vast estate, the gardeners, fountain engineers and sculptors carried out Louis 14th’s excessive vision.
