Man first settled in this fertile region during Antiquity, and it became a busy crossroads for trade.

The Isthmus of Corinth, between the Ionian and Aegean Seas, is a thin strip of land joining the Peloponnese peninsula to continental Greece. The period between the 6th and 19th centuries saw an increase in various attacks and attempts at conquest. The isthmus was occupied in turn by the Romans, the Byzantines, the Franks, the Venetians and the Ottomans. Following the independence and unity of Greece in 1822, trade remained a key concern for the region.
