Of the 24 inhabited islands of the Cyclades, Syros is the prefecture of the archipelago. The neo classical architecture of its capital Ermoupoli constitutes a unique urban landscape.

The town started developing in the 19th century with the arrival of Greeks from Asia Minor. Syros has witnessed several waves of immigration, the first of which dates back to the 19th century, with the arrival of thousands of Greek refugees fleeing the Turkish occupation. In the space of a few years, Syros became one of the largest ports on the Aegean Sea.
