In 1534, the ‘Affair of the Placards’ marked the public emergence of the Reformation in France: clandestine posters began to target the Roman Church, as far as within the King's inner circle. Despite the following repression, the incident revealed a profound religious schism and heralded the long era of the French Wars of Religion.
