Colored powder breaks down the barriers between people. Since Antiquity, to mark the spring equinox, the whole of India celebrates Holi, the festival of colors. During this celebration, Indians of all castes throw colored powder in the faces of those they meet.

It is in a very conservative part of Uttar Pradesh that this Hindu ritual is observed with the greatest fervor. For the duration of this ritual, social differences are erased, and whatever one’s place on the social scale, everyone wishes one another the best for the future.
Holi represents the temporary abolition of established hierarchies of age, caste, gender, wealth and power.
Bagwan and his wife Ludmila belong to the caste of untouchables, and Holi is an important moment in their lives. Once a year, along with the rest of the country, they cheerfully break down the traditional social order. Once a year, they are no longer untouchables, but a man and a woman like everyone else.
