Collonges-la-Rouge is known as the « the town with 25 towers ». It is a village in the Limousin region, built within the walls of an 8th century priory.
When it was founded by monks from the neighbouring abbey in Charroux, it provided protection for a broad range of peasants, traders and craftsmen, and so the village developed and grew, its economy based on welcoming pilgrims on the Way of Saint James. The architecture is based on stone and red earth, and all the houses are built from the same materials. The stone has has been cut here by the same family of stonecutters for generations.
