Its desert landscapes have long been home to armed groups that threaten world order: Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) and the Houthis, a pro-Iranian militia that controls the capital of Yemen, Sanaa. One of the world's poorest countries, Yemen is a no media location whose shockwaves extend far beyond its borders. For several months now, the country has been back at the heart of the world's political, military and commercial game.
Yemen, which has been ravaged by deadly wars for over a decade, is a strategic territory ignored by the media, but crucial to world trade, with 10% of shipping passing close to its shores. After the October 7 attack, the Houthis intensified their actions, striking Israel and further destabilizing the region. In September 2024, a Yemeni missile pierced Israel's Iron Dome, leading Israel to bomb the port of Hodeidah. In May 2025, the Houthi movement fired a ballistic missile at Tel Aviv, hitting the perimeter of the main terminal of Ben Gurion Airport. In retaliation, the Israeli air force bombed Sanaa's airport. The Houthis also attack ships with ties to Israel, disrupting international shipping. Western powers have strengthened their military presence to counter the attacks, which are often carried out with Iranian missiles.
