John Howe travels to Germany, the birthplace of the legend of the Niebelungen or the “Gold of the Rhine”. There he meets Canadian writer David Day, the author of several works on Tolkien. Will they discover the origins of the Hobbits in this legend, which is full of dwarfs, dragons and a magic ring?

Together, they will come across the life of Siegfried, thanks to an amusing guide they find from castle to castle. They will also reflect on the numerous links between the legend of the Nibelungen and the world of the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings, such as the magic ring, the dragon figure, and the hero who is heir to a kingdom.
