From Thessaloniki, Greece, a haunting and nostalgic complaint can be heard. Rebetiko, this traditional Greek music, was borne out of a trauma. Driven out of Turkey in the 1920s, millions of Greeks took refuge in this port city with its white tower.
The local baglamas then mixed with Turkish ouds and bouzoukis to create oriental sounds. In the city's tekkes, people meet to sing about love, the hookah or simply their daily life and express their sorrow at having lost everything.
