On October 17, 1961, at the call of the FLN, 20 to 30,000 Algerians from France peacefully marched through Paris. 12,000 people were arrested. The roundup, organized by the police prefect Maurice Papon, was followed by very brutal abuses and numerous disappearances.

It was the most violent state repression of a street demonstration in Europe since the end of the Second World War. The events of October 17, 1961, were noticeably overlooked in national memory. Moreover, they were long overshadowed by the Charonne massacre of February 8, 1962. But nowadays there is a tendency to shed an unforgiving spotlight on our collective memory. The shadows of our past are brought up again.
