Okinawa is home to the world’s largest concentration of centenarians.
The reason for their longevity is thought to be their balanced food intake - the famous “Okinawa diet”. The Riukyu Kingdom reigned in Okinawa until 1879, when the islands became part of Japan. Okinawa’s Chinese neighbours maintained trade relations with these prosperous islands. Inhabitants of Okinawa do not mix with tourists, and are afraid of the sun. And they keep themselves hidden, especially the elderly.
