In the mountains of the Costa Rican province of Heredia, there is a one-of-a-kind animal shelter: the “Territorio de Zaguates” (Territory of Street Dogs). More than a thousand mongrels are hosted on this 150-hectare site where they roam freely.
Abandoning your dog – or, at best, giving it to someone else – is a common practice on the Caribbean coast. Lya Ballte and her husband Alvaro Saumet have already taken in tens of thousands of dogs: forgotten or rejected animals, sick or old, but also many young stray dogs in perfect health. They had a very clever idea to help them get another family; the team tries to place the animals by highlighting each tail-wagger's physical characteristics.
