Native to North America, raccoons have been proliferating in Europe for the past century. In Berlin, these nocturnal omnivorous mammals find suitable conditions for feeding and shelter. Despite their friendly appearance, they are considered pests. In 2016, the species was even classified as invasive by the European Union, meaning it poses a danger to the continent's ecosystems. Since then, raccoons have been officially hunted in Germany. Berlin vet Mathilde Laininger, meanwhile, advocates peaceful cohabitation between humans and the masked-faced plantigrades.

These mammals can cause considerable damage, especially when they take up residence in roofs and attics. Biologist Carolin Weh knows all about the problem. For several years now, she has been studying the behavior of raccoons in urban environments, and advising private individuals faced with problems with these animals on behalf of the Berlin state administration.
Could an innovative pilot project involving the capture and castration of individuals before their release be the solution to effectively reduce the number of individuals and thus limit conflicts with city dwellers? Is peaceful coexistence between humans and raccoons possible?
