Just a few years ago, donkeys in Montenegro were threatened with extinction, but fortunately this is no longer the case. Darko Saveljić deserves much of the credit for this. In 2015, he rescued the first donkey from the clutches of her abusive owners. Shortly afterwards, the biologist took in two other equines destined to end up as food for hunting dogs.
Thirty years ago, these faithful beasts of burden were a guarantee of survival for Montenegrin farmers. They were indispensable in the countryside, until the rural exodus and agricultural machinery rendered them superfluous and worthless. Although donkeys are part of the cultural heritage of the Balkans, today they are an endangered species. Saving the last of the donkeys, providing them with a suitable living environment and raising awareness of the need to protect animal species is Darko's mission today.
