The people of Connemara are proud that their region is the cradle of a breed of horse known for its endurance and friendliness - the Connemara pony. The inhospitable natural environment, as well as various crosses with Iberian horses and English thoroughbreds, have gradually "shaped" the appearance of this muscular double pony with an imposing neck, which once pulled the ploughs here to transport peat or seaweed on these difficult rocky soils. A must-see event for all Irish horse lovers this year is the 100th Clifden Pony Show. It is the world's largest gathering of lovers of the famous Connemara pony, the island's only native breed.
