In Laos, farmers and herders sell a buffalo whenever they need to pay medical bills, finance a wedding or compensate for a poor rice harvest. Except that their ruminants are mostly malnourished. Weakened, they are prey to parasites and sometimes decimated by epidemics. An innovating diet could remedy this situation.
A team of young animal welfare specialists is determined to get the buffalo back on their feet. They give them food supplements in the form of lickable blocks. The buffaloes put on weight, are healthier and produce 30% more milk. Until now, milking has been unknown in Laos, where one child in three does not have enough to eat. As the first 1,000 days of life are decisive, we must not delay in giving Laotian children goat's or buffalo's milk as a dietary supplement, as prolonged undernutrition causes irreversible damage.
