There were 100,000 cheetahs at the beginning of the 20th century. There are now only 12,000. Of the 8,000 cheetahs in south-west Africa, a third live in Namibia. Protecting them is becoming increasingly difficult, as the law allows farmers to kill cheetahs that pose a threat to their lives or their livestock.
In Namibia, the cheetahs are moving from sparsely populated game reserves to fertile farmland with thousands of cattle, sheep and goats, which are easy prey for these carnivores. This leads to conflicts with farmers, who do not hesitate to shoot these predators. As a result, cheetah numbers have been dwindling steadily for decades. Wildlife organisations, such as the Naankuse Foundation Wildlife Sanctuary set up by Marlice van Vuuren, show farmers ways to avoid systematically shooting the big cats.
