Pablo Escobar had four hippos imported to populate his private zoo. After his death, they regained their freedom, and the freedom to reproduce happily. Biologists are now waging a relentless campaign against these gigantic intruders, which are threatening the flora, fauna and increasingly the local population.
When Pablo Escobar bought African hippos on a whim in the 1980s, no one in Colombia imagined that they would ravage the country’s ecosystem. Today, it is not just four hippos that have escaped after their owner’s death, but several hundreds. These behemoths, which have no predators in South America, reproduce, pollute the water with their acidic excrement, thus displacing local species, and also threaten the existence of river fishermen. While Isabel Romero finds ways to make the hippos lucrative, veterinarian Gina Serna is desperate to find a way to regulate the species.
