The monk seal is one of the most mysterious marine mammals in the Mediterranean. The 500 or so individuals of this depleted species live in Greek and Turkish waters, lurking in underwater caves. A Swiss scientific team is trying to learn more about their way of life, in order to better protect them.
Monk seals have been roaming the Mediterranean beaches since ancient times. Long hunted for their skin and blubber, or because they competed with fishermen and deprived them of their livelihood, these marine mammals took refuge in virtually inaccessible caves in order to survive. A team from the Octopus Foundation made up of sailors, photographers, divers and accompanied by biologists and Mediterranean residents are combining their efforts to understand how this threatened species lives.
