Thanks to rescue operations and the importation of specimens, from the Maghreb in particular, the stork reintroduction program in Alsace is a success. But some inhabitants have deemed this repopulation “too massive” and are now pushing back.
In the mid-1970s, only nine pairs of storks remained in Alsace. The high-voltage power lines on which these birds nested was truly a death trap. Nicknamed “papa stork”, Gerard Wey, one of the initiators of the program to reintroduce this species to the region, participated in several rescue operations and created about twenty breeding centers by importing specimens, notably from the Maghreb. And those thirty years of toiling bore fruits. But some inhabitants have deemed this repopulation “too massive” and are now pushing back.
