We had already crossed paths with the Grizzly of the Canadian temperate forests in British Columbia. But this time, we had set ourselves the challenge of photographing it as close up as possible!

We arranged to meet 78-year old Keith Scott in the small town of Prince Rupert, just south of Alaska. Keith is fascinated by bears and lives between his car, two motels and his Grizzly pals.

On his advice, we met James Heinz, a native American from the Nuxalk tribe, who lives in the village of Bella Coola. James owns a log cabin right in the heart of an Indian reserve. The area is forbidden to tourists but he guides us through the luscious and magnificent landscape. His cabin - our headquarters - turns out to be the perfect location for spotting Grizzlies.

We come face to face with one of them just around a bend in the river, and have to manoeuvre our boat, quickly and carefully, through the current just metres away from the huge animal. A truly hair raising encounter.
