Internationally renowned and multi-talented artist Christian Boltanski, used all kinds of materials to summon memory and better question the present. For 50 years, experimental filmmaker Alain Fleischer, filmed the artist to achieve a unique archive that covers his whole work since 1969.  This film is the result of their joint creation, the artist’s most complete biography.

Christian Boltanski is recognized worldwide as one of the leading contemporary artists. Photographer, sculptor, and filmmaker, he is most famous for his installation art and his contemporary French conceptual style. Exhibited all over the world, he has questioned the frontier between absence and presence his whole life, through themes that are omnipresent in his work: memory, the unconscious, childhood, and death. This film is an unprecedented documentary and a true “experiment” between an art maverick and an erratic filmmaker. Since 1969, Alain Fleischer and Christian Boltanski have shared both an unbreakable friendship and an unclassifiable documentary project. In 2019, the major retrospective devoted to Christian Boltanski at the Centre Pompidou was the ideal opportunity for Alain Fleischer to unveil this film, which may have taken the longest time to shoot in the history of cinema: 50 years. An unseen portrait of the artist, with priceless, rare, and unhoped-for archives.
