Tens of millions of bison once roamed the plains of the Great American West. By the end of the 19th century, there were barely 300 in the whole of the USA. Only 23 in Yellowstone National Park – then newly created, and yet as large as Corsica. A diligent conservation policy has brought them back from the brink of extinction on this continent. The bison population’s recovery is one of the conservationists’ greatest achievements. Their success exceeded all expectations and yet posed new challenges. In Yellowstone Park in particular, the bison are now nearing overpopulation. So, how can we secure new land for the bison?
