Following the unusual itinerary of a Franco-Belgian family who lived in Japan from 1925 to 1945, this film sheds light on a complex period of the hardening of the regime, when Japan turned into a war machine.
Jean Millot, a young French engineer, came to Japan in 1925, to set up the electrical telegraph between Japan and France. The Shōwa era, meaning "enlightened peace", began in a Japan that was experiencing tremendous change. But the world economic crisis, combined with a militaristic right-wing, destabilized the country. At the same time, Jean met Emmy. The couple started a family and moved to Japan. The Millots would then witness the hardening of the regime, until the tragedy of the Second World War. This film tells the story of this devastating period when Japan turned into a war machine.
