In the Mongolian taiga, Tuvan reindeer herders face a difficult decision: live in the mountains with their reindeer or move to the city to provide an education for their children.
Today, most families are divided: the wife and children move to the city and the men stay behind to herd reindeer. When a young Tuvan girl named Sarangerel fell ill at her boarding school in the city, the local doctors could not find a cure for her. A healer diagnosed her with a "shamanic illness". To heal, she must return to the forest of her ancestors and become a shaman herself. In the taiga, reindeer-herding nomads are bound to a sacred reindeer throughout their lives. When a child falls ill for the first time in their life, the tribal elder chooses a reindeer with special traits to protect them from bad luck. Sarangerel must learn to heal herslef through a series of initiations and rituals to connect with her protective reindeer.
