He had a dream… On 2 July 1964, he thought it had finally come true after 10 years of struggle, that the Civil Rights movement had been enough to put an end to racial segregation in the US. Economic inequality, unemployment, discrimination in housing… This part of his fight against poverty is less known but still resonates today.

Ten years of great pacifist marches and countless risks, including many imprisonments and beatings, were necessary for US President Lyndon B. Johnson and then Congress to finally ban racial segregation, first by passing the Civil Rights Act, then by intro- ducing the right to vote for all, thirteen months later, with the Voting Rights Act.
A historic breakthrough. Or so it seemed…
For everyone, including Martin Luther King, soon came to realize that reality was quite diffe- rent. While racial justice seemed to have evolved – on paper at least – inequalities remained visible. Housing, unemployment, and other socio-economic difficulties continued to plague the country’s working-class neighborhoods. Martin Luther King understood that without social justice, there would never be equality. Thus began his new struggle.
