A thrilling investigation into the (tree) root(s) of Van Gogh’s last painting… A happy accident that leads us to find the original and untouched landscape that inspired Vincent, right before he killed himself.

For more than 130 years,Tree Roots has never ceased to raise questions about what it represents, its symbolism and, above all, where and under what circumstances the Dutch master painted it. But since the summer of 2020, part of the mystery has been lifted, thanks to the unexpected discovery made by one of the painter's best specialists, French-Dutch Wouter van der Veen. While tidying up his house during the first lockdown, he found the actual subject of the painting and the precise location of its creation on an old postcard from Auvers-sur-Oise. A subject and a place that say a lot about the painter's psychological state a few hours before his deadly act.
What if Tree Roots was Van Gogh's testamentary painting? A strange, almost abstract work that would tell us, better than any narrative, the last hours of the life of this brilliant and tortured painter? This is what we will try to discover in this film, which will be presented as a breathtaking art investigation on one of the greatest artists of the 19th century.
