The population of White Storks declined rapidly in Europe after the Second World War.
The species fell prey to drought in the southern Sahel, to the development of intensive agriculture, to pesticides and to high-voltage overhead power lines in Europe.
It looked like the familiar Stork was about to die out, with nothing being done about it. But Stork lovers, including both amateur and professional ornithologists, raised the alarm, and started acting on their declining numbers.
